FALLS CHURCH, VA – March 31, 2023

BreakPoint Labs, LLC (“BreakPoint Labs”), a technically proficient, mission-focused cybersecurity service provider, announced today the award of a competitive contract by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division to deliver cybersecurity Risk Management Framework (RMF) technical services. Under the contract, BreakPoint Labs will serve as a security control assessor to provide cybersecurity policy and control evaluations, RMF package creation and maintenance support, and subject matter expertise in DoD cyber defense. Contract performance areas include cybersecurity risk management activities supporting the NAVSEA Functional Authorizing Official (FAO) and the Navy Authorizing Official (NAO), as well as the NSWC Dahlgren-supported systems under the purview of the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) FAO, Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Army, Marine Corps processes, and/or other Authorizing Officials.

BreakPoint Labs will provide expertise with the Department’s risk-based approach to facilitate standardization and transparency within reviews to ensure high-quality, authorization-ready RMF packages for the Command.  Considering the RMF Reform efforts underway within the Navy and other Services, BreakPoint Labs will also pursue opportunities to streamline RMF processes and reduce the Government’s cost and processing timeline while increasing cyber defense capabilities for the Command, and its RDT&E and operational community stakeholders.

“The award results from an in-depth understanding of the unique complexities and requirements of the Department’s RDT&E community,” said Thomas George, BreakPoint Labs’ CEO. “Since its inception, BreakPoint Labs has supported some of the most prominent, high-impact DoD RDT&E programs by providing Senior Leaders the requisite insight to effectively manage and monitor cyber risk-to-mission. We’re thankful for the opportunity to support NAVSEA NSWC Dahlgren Division and are excited to enable risk-informed authorization decisions based on accurate, reliable, and timely information“.

The contract, which has a period of performance up to 5 years, was awarded on a competitive basis and includes work locations in Dahlgren and Virginia Beach, Virginia.

BreakPoint Labs has successfully completed a direct to Phase IIB SBIR effort to tailor BISON (BreakPoint Labs Integrated Sensor for Operational Networks) to additive manufacturing cybersecurity.  This success involved emulating how an adversary could tamper with the AM environment, from the upstream Windows engineering workstations to the additive tools used across the DOD and small-to-medium sized manufacturers.  From this “Red Teaming” we have developed robust detection and alerting mechanisms that are simple enough for non-cybersecurity professionals to leverage.  Our research is increasing trust in these processes by adding visibility into the digital communications involved in operations of these tools.  Going beyond cybersecurity, this increased process visibility is also great for QC managers to trace individual prints “digital footprint” such as print orientation and temperature historian capabilities.

Rise Again of Niche Competitors

“Most of the products are good and have value for an asset owner. So a niche competitor who has a close relationship with the buyer, is willing to spend more time with the customer, be more flexible on demos and pilot pricing, customize their solution, or just knows that niche better will win some deals.”

(Peterson ICS detection market – part 1)

BreakPoint Labs is a great example of Mr. Peterson’s above statements.  We are pleased to announce that the development of our niche ICS detection product will be advanced through a SBIR Phase III award – Enhancing BISON to Additive Manufacturing Cybersecurity.  We look forward to increasing BISON capabilities and introducing cybersecurity functionality in 3D printers to prevent adversaries taking away this capability to produce components at the point of need, just in time.

If you are interested in learning more about securing AM or a demonstration of the BISON capability, please contact us at info@breakpoint-labs.com.
